Whatcha Working on Wednesday

Leslie over at My Country Home hosts a very fun Whatcha Working on Wednesday carnival. Well, it definitely helps me to stay on top of things. I mean I keep going to the thrift stores and buy items to refinish and then it piles up because I don't have enough free time to do it. Hmmm, I bet I sound like alot of you prim gals - huh? Well, I am sure alot of you remember this ugly cheese board. It was a thrift store goodie, but when I bought it for 50 cents I had no clue how hard it would be to sand those ugly flowers off it. Uh yeah, my hands and fingers are so ugly and dry it is unbelievable. Well, I sanded off as much as I could and thought I would paint it a light buttermilk over black.
I sanded until I felt like my fingers and hands were ready to fall off and then put the base coat of black on the board. You can still see an outline of one of those ugly flowers, but trust me..... you soon won't see that.
After the 2 black coats of paint dried, I applied my light buttermilk paint. I loved the color, but I would rather work with work with artists pigment paint rather then just plain old paint. I have found it is easier for me to rub off and sand down. I am learning new things as I go and what works best for me so that is always a good thing.
It is dry and now it is time for sanding. Yep, I bought a new sanding block and I think I have worn it out just on this board. Hmmm, maybe I need to invest in a little hand sander or something especially if I am gonna keep this up of refinishing items.
Slowly taking shape, but I would still prefer to have more sanded off. Perhaps I need another sanding block : )
After I complete the sanding..... I am planning on rubbing on some walnut stain to give it a darker look. Right now the buttermilk paint is a little bright for me and not quite what I am looking for. What do you ladies think? I am looking for it to be a bit more primitive.

I love cutting boards! You did a great job with that.

I know what you mean about the sanding - I did LOTS of sanding this morning!

Blessings,
Mandy

Hi, Lisa.
I love the buttermilk over the black. If you want a primmer look I would maybe put some stain on it but then wipe it right off. You don't want to cover that beautiful painting & sanding job you did. I have my little power sand with the mouse point and I love it. I hardly ever hand sand anymore. Have a wonderful day.

I think you did a great job on the cutting boards!

I have sanded the tips off of my fingers before when I have sanded too much.

Hang in there!

I think it came out nice, but I always rub on some stain or umber paint to darken things up. I think doing that just brings it to life and really makes a big difference.
This piece will look great in your kitchen. :)

Hi Lisa,
Thanks for stopping for a visit:)

I have two of those breadboards that had the 1951's design on them, I only did the plain side side os it prim because they were just to hard to sand off:)

Yes, great minds do think alike.lol
I used minwax walnut stain that I bought at Walmart in a pint size can for 4.97. I like it better than the gel stain and as for the briwax well, I just can't afford it right now:)Have a wonderful day Lisa!

That looks super duper, Lisa...the stain will make it look even better :)
You really should get a palm sander...so much easier... just think how many more projects ya can do if you can cut down on your sanding time!! LOL, you'll be sanding everything in sight!

Have a wonderful evening.

Hi Lisa,
Love the cutting board! You did a wonderful job. If you want it a little more primitive...I would put some stain or gel stain over it and then wipe it to get any extra off. You will still see your great painting, but it will look more prim.
I sent you an email about my back-splash.

I like your made over cheese board. It's definitely an improvement! The flowers were just lovely! LOL

I have been hand sanding a lot lately but I do have a palm sander for the bigger jobs. Love that thing because I just light rub it in a few spots and it's DONE!

Have a great night :)

Girl, your hard work paid off!!! It doesn't look like the same cutting board. You really took it "back in the day" and when you do the staining technique it will be perfect. I just did this to a dry sink and it was amazing the difference the stain made. Enjoy! Sherrie
