Rag Ball Ornaments

Well, I got out my totes full of Christmas decorations and put out a few things here and there, but that is as far as I got.  I hate it when I get distracted.  Anyway, I put up a few things on the wall, got some of my greenery out and got out a couple trees.  I got one of my trees out and thought that it needed something different this year.  I was thinking about what I could put on the tree in order to bring some life to it and I thought some little rag ball ornaments would be cute.  Well, I had some old glass ball ornaments that I don’t use anymore so I thought I would put them to good use.  I grabbed some red homespun and let my creativity go to work.  I was pretty pleased with the way that they turned out too.  Here is a brief tutorial…..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I took my Elmer’s glue and watered it down just a little bit.  I used a q-tip to mix the glue up and apply it to the bulb.
109
I then took my homespun and tore it into small thin pieces and then cut a few to put in areas that might not get covered.  I made sure that my strips were frayed so it would look just like a rag ball.  I wanted something real prim for my tree.
110
I applied my glue and totally covered the glass bulb.
112
I started wrapping the homespun around the bulb and added extra glue when I needed it.
113
Completely wrap all areas of the bulb. When you are finished…totally and completely cover the bulb with the  glue mixture.  This will allow the bulb to dry and harden.  Once the rag ball decorations are dry, the cloth will be hard and that will prevent the homespun from moving or unraveling.
114
Here are a few that I made.  I hung them in a place where I knew they would dry quickly.  This prim gal is not patient (lol).
111
I then decided that I needed to do something to cover up those bright gold tops.  So, I applied more glue and sprinkled them with cinnamon.  Not only do they look great, but they smell wonderful too.  Here they are on my tree.  So, what do you think?  Really looks cute on my tree – huh?
121
I also coffee stained my tree skirt.  It wasn’t quite dark enough for me.  So, after a big distraction and a little break, I am off to do more decorating.  More pictures coming soon.
Until Next Time……..Lisa
Thrift Store Tuesday
Do you all remember this sled that I bought at my local thrift store months and months ago?
170 171
Well, I re-finished it this past weekend when it was beautiful and 60 out and well I am glad that I did it.  It has been not so warm out and well to be quite frank with all of you…..it has just been too cold.  I want that warmer weather back.  Anyway, I wanted to paint the sled a barn red so it would show up more when I hung it up on my front porch.  I was definitely pleased with the way it turned out.  Take a look.
101 102
I gave the one part of the sled another coat of flat black spray paint and then I used Barn Red on the top.  Once I was done, I sanded off a bit and then used my Dark Walnut Gel Stain on it.  I remembered after I used the gel stain why I like the other stain so much more.  Everyone is different.  I used what I had handy and well since I couldn’t find the liquid form…..well, I used the gel instead.  It still turned out nice.
Did I mention to you all that I took my Halloween/Fall/Thanksgiving decorations down already?  I took them down and packed them away for another year.  I went and looked through some of my totes, but have not put any Christmas stuff up yet.  I need to do it this week sometime because after Thanksgiving time is going to be hectic with helping my parents get settled in.  Yep, they are due to close this week on both ends and then next week they move.  This weekend is going to be busy working on Mom’s cupboards and well, I just simply won’t have the time to take care of my home and get my decorations up.  So, I guess I will attempt to do it this week sometime.  Here are some decorations that I came across……these will go on my big tree.  Aren’t they just so cute and prim?
182 183 184 185
I am also planning on putting a tree up in Cameron’s room.  He is so excited about it.  I thought he deserved his own “little tree” with his own decorations.  I have started collecting ornaments for him for every year since being born.  That way when he moves out then he has an ornament for every year.  A great idea – huh?  I thought it was a nice tradition.  Anyway……..we did put our outside decorations up this past weekend since the weather was so warm.  We are going to go with something more simple this year.  We normally have white lights everywhere, but I didn’t feel like putting them up so we just did a few here and a few there plus I will have my prim Santa out along with my manger scene that my FIL made for me one year.  It should look just as nice, but without all the hub bub.  I will leave you with just a taste of what my farm table “MIGHT” look like during the Christmas/Winter months.  After just experimenting a little bit….. I thought this looked beautiful, but I have much more to try as well.  Gotta love the beauty of trying things out on the table (lol).  Isn’t it pretty?  Gotta love my candlesticks that I re-finished.  They look beautiful with my battery operated prim candles.
Ok, I promise this is my last picture for the day.  My son is always wanting to put on Daddy’s shoes and wear one of Daddy’s ties so just yesterday, I dressed him up and drew a moustache and goatee on him with some glasses.  He absolutely loved it.  He said he looked just like Daddy.  Anyway, I sent the picture to my husband at work and he of course thought it was to cute.  Gotta love Halloween face crayons.  Thought I would share the picture of Daddy Junior with you.  Enjoy!
Chuck Full Of News & Pictures
Let me first of all say “Thank You” to all that wished Shawn and I a Happy Anniversary.  We had a great day yesterday just spending it together with our son.  My sweet hubby asked me what I wanted to do and I told him that my Mom had bought me this old, very old cupboard in Amish country and I wanted to go pick it up.  Well, I also mentioned how I use to go with my grandparents to a restaurant called Watts in Utica, Ohio.  I remember going and getting the best homemade noodles, coleslaw and coconut pie.  Oh, it was so good and I wanted to remember those memories that I shared with them, but I also wanted my husband and son to experience it as well.  So, we headed towards Amish Country and cut through Utica on the way.  It was a wonderful day!!  We were there when they opened at 11:00 and we sat down and had a great meal.  I had everything that I had when I was younger and I remember just like it was back then.  The restaurant was still the same with the awful looking wallpaper, but the meal was chuck full of great memories that I was able to share.  Here are some pictures of our day.  I thought I would let you all experience the goodness as well.  Great memories were made here with my grandparents and it was wonderful to share that with “my” family.
111 112
Trust me ~ I didn’t eat all of that food.  I was full after eating part of my mashed potatoes, all of my coleslaw and part of my noodles, but I had to try the pie again so we got some of their famous coconut meringue pie.  Yep, it was just like I remembered everything!  We sat in the area that I took a picture of, but they have a couple other dining areas as well.  It is a great little place for homemade cooking.  You just gotta remember to get there when they open if you want some of their coconut pie.
Once we left there, I told my husband that I wanted to see if we could go find my great grandparents house.  They have been gone for many years, but I wanted to see where my Mom spent alot of her time and where they lived.  It wasn’t too far from the restaurant and I am pretty sure that we found it per Mom’s directions.  It was so run down, but I had to take a picture for my Mom.  It definitely needs work and my great grandfather would probably roll over in his grave if he saw it today.  He always took such pride in his home and it was always manicured some beautifully and full of beautiful flowers.  Sounds like it was just a showplace back in the day (lol).
134
135 137
139
Hope these pictures brought back some great memories for you Mom!
I also told my husband that my great grandparents were laid to rest not too far from their home.  Well, we came upon the road that the cemetery was located by chance and we I stumbled across where they were laid.  It overlooks some beautiful hills and scenery there in Utica.   I even thought the little church was so cute and in a beautiful setting out in the middle of nowhere.  Gotta love Amish Country.
144
161
162 163
Here is where my great grandparents were laid to rest many many years ago and this tree is one of the many trees that my great grandfather had planted in the cemetery and took care of.  This is one that was planted very close to where they are laid.
148 146 150
I can see why my great grandparents wanted to be laid here.  Look at that view!!  I am not too fond of cemeteries, but this had a beautiful view.  I was also wondering if some headstones that were just beside theirs belonged to my great grandmothers family.  I am trying to do some research, but it is like heck trying to find anything on ancestry (lol).  I thought that since they were the same type of headstone that maybe they were my great grandmothers brother and parents.
156 155 154
What do you think?  I think there is a possibility.  I just need to do some more research.  Hopefully I can find something.  I will keep you all posted.  Ok, so enough of headstones (lol).
Let’s move on down the road…..I saw this covered bridge on our way to get my cupboard and thought it was so pretty!
122
130 131
It was so pretty compared to the gas station that I had to stop by on the way there to use the restroom.  Oh geesh, talk about out in the middle of nowhere!!  My husband told me to go out into the corn field, but then I saw a  NO TRESPASSING sign and thought I would get shot in the middle of using the restroom (lol).  So, we went to the gas station that was many more miles down the road.  Oh ~ I am so glad that I didn’t have an accident.  Anyway, this restroom was absolutely disgusting!!  I mean the cornfield had to have been cleaner.  It was disgusting….just nasty!!  I am surprised I didn’t get some kind of bugs or something just by walking into the restroom.  It needs to be burnt down (lol).
So, shall we look at this cupboard?  My Mom and my husband think I am totally crazy for wanting this cupboard, but I see GREAT potential in it.  I scrubbed it down today with a brush and some soap, but it still needs lots of work.  I am pretty sure that it was used in an old barn.  It has a bad and peculiar odor to it, but I am hoping that with scrubbing it, sanding it, primming it and painting it then it will lose that odor, but we will see.  If it doesn’t then I will have the best looking cupboard in my garage when I am done (lol).  Let me just tell you a bit about this scrubbing process that I did today.  Oh, I put on my gloves and scrubbed this piece down like a crazy lady!  It had dead bugs upon dead bugs and well then there were more dead bugs and then there were bees and mud and dirt and leaves and well anything else that could do with farmland…..well, it just needs some work, but I am up for the challenge.  If the weather stays nice then I will finish it soon, but if not then I will have to wait til spring time.  Heck it might take that long to refinish it, but it will be well worth it when I am done with it.  It needs new hinges, new knobs, primmer, paint and stain and it should be good to go.  Ok, enough is enough…..let’s look at this cupboard.  I would like to use it for our TV stand, but we will see.  It is rather a large piece.
114
Gotta love the mix match of hinges and knobs (lol).  Talk about a challenge!!  You ladies just wait……you will be absolutely impressed and surprised when I am done with it.  Let’s take a look at the inside.  Don’t be grossed out – ok?
113
117 115
Very prim with great potential – don’t you think?  I love the top of it.  I love the little holes that are everywhere.
116 119
So, what do you all think?  Does it have great prim potential or what?  It is funny because I think there are even a few areas where maybe a horse gnawed on it, but I guess that is what you call prim and no one will ever see it once I am done with it.  Stay Tuned for pictures on the re-finished cupboard.  It will be well worth the wait.  Well, I better run for now.  I have a little boy that needs a bath and I wanna relax after tackling that cupboard.
Until Next Time….Blessings, Lisa
Longaberger Baskets
Are you all familiar with Longaberger baskets?  Quite a few years ago when I was working in Corporate America and enjoying my paychecks as they rolled in, I would treat myself to a basket here and there.  I loved seeing what baskets were going to come out next and loved going to their Homestead to go shopping.  It was alot of fun!
My taste has changed over the years and I am looking to sell my Longaberger baskets.  Alot of my baskets have liners and some of them have garters and most of them have have the hard plastic protectors to fit inside.  I am currently going through my totes to get out all of my baskets and get pictures of them.  I am curious to see if I have any interested gals out there that would like to buy some or all of my baskets.  They are all in great shape and have only been used for decorating purposes.  I have taken a few pictures to show you what some of them look like.  If you would possibly be interested then please leave me a comment.  I will over the next couple days be taking pictures of them and be quoting prices.  If the basket has a liner and a protector that will be included in the price and will come with the basket seeing as though I have no use for the liner or protector without the basket.  If I have no buyers then I will proceed to put them on E-Bay and sell them all as one item.  Thank you for your interest!!
This is a cracker basket and holds 1 sleeve of crackers.  Perfect for entertaining!
014
This is the 1999 Daisy Basket.  It has a protector and liner.
This is the spoon basket and it comes with the garter.
015
This is the 2000 Edition of the Deck the Halls Basket.  It comes with 2 different protectors and would be great for entertaining.  Just put a few pickles, olives, dip and  crackers in the top protector and a little ice in the bottom to keep any dips cool.  That is what it was suppose to be used for, but once again I only used it for decoration.  This also comes with a Christmas liner and lid.
012
010
011
This is the Woven Memories Basket for 2000.  This was a basket that you could only buy at the Homestead and the liner does come with it.  I think this one even has a protector.
018
013
Well, that gives you an idea as to some of the many baskets that I have and I am willing to sell.    I will be posting more on my blog over the next couple days and will also put them on my selling blog.  Prices and shipping will be posted as well during that time.
What a Big Week
What a big week we have ahead of ourselves.  Tomorrow is a  walk-thru at my parents new home.  I will be doing that for them since they are 2 hours away.  I have a list of things that I have to check on for them and my Dad has given me some other instructions so my notepad, pen and camera are ready.
This Saturday is a very special day for my husband and I because we will be celebrating our 6th wedding anniversary.  He is taking me to Amish Country for the day and I asked if he would take me to this restaurant that my Grandpa use to take me to and he said that would be fine.  I love thinking about old times I use to share with my grandparents and for me to sit down and have lunch there…..well, it would be a nice treat!  We will then head to Amish Country for a day of window shopping.  I know, I know…..why go when you can’t buy, but we have to watch our money and lunch in itself will be a treat for me.  I hate not having the money I use to have….. it is so hard at times especially when I use to be able to just buy whatever I wanted to buy, but times are tough and I have to remember that I get to stay home with Cameron which is a blessing and a gift in itself.  I hope to get a little something from my hubby, but we will see.
I have been trying my best to stay busy lately.  I have had alot on my mind and it is best to keep busy so that is what I have been doing.  I haven’t been sleeping very well because our mattress is just awful, I had some people in my husband’s family tell me how to raise my son, that what they were doing wasn’t going to hurt them and they walk all over Shawn and I and it is quite hurtful.  I spent the afternoon, yesterday evening and today trying to get calmed down about it, but it is quite bothersome.  It is an ongoing thing and I am just personally getting sick of it.  It is not like I can hardly do anything about it when they are “family” so we at times just bite our lip and let them walk all over us and not respect us as people or parents instead of speaking up and making waves.  I long for some guidance so any help or suggestions from you all would be so appreciated.  I sometimes wish I had more nerves to speak up, but that just isn’t me and instead of creating a mess between my husband and his parents…..well, I just let things be.  Anyway, I have been re-arranging a few things here and there and thought I would share some pictures.  Do you all remember these bowls that I re-finished?
014
Well, I decided that I wanted them on the side of my cupboard so I hung those up last night.  I also hung up one of my new signs that I made and also found something to put under that sign.  It took me awhile to get it all up because I was having a hard time trying to find something to put under my new sign.  So, what do you all think?
143
142
I also found a great place for my tallow berries too!  I put them in my new crock and I thought they looked great.  I might try to take a few out so I can put some elsewhere, but we will see.  I love the way they look in that crock.  So prim perfect!!  Thank you again Sherrie for your kindness.  It is greatly appreciated my friend.
103
I did however change things around a bit with this picture…..the updated and re-arranged picture is now being used as my header.  Gotta love it.  Well, I am off to start preparing my dinner.  I am fixing my Grandma’s chicken noodle casserole.  I thought it would bring back great memories plus Cameron loves chicken and noodles so we can’t go wrong there.
Hope you all have a great week!!
P.S.  Alot of you gals have asked me where I purchased the candle sleeves.  You can pick them up at any lighting store and might be able to find them at a craft store such as Michael’s, but I would always call first.  Thank you for the great comments.
Punched Tin is a Wonderful Thing
My husband the handyman.  I really never thought that I could say that, but I love the fact that he is taking interest in it and I must say that it makes me so happy!  My Mom was so thoughtful when we were in Amish Country last weekend and bought me a punched tin light for my entryway.  I guess I don’t have to go on and on about how thoughtful my Mom is….. I am sure you already know how thoughtful she is and she doesn’t even need to buy me anything.  She indeed has a wonderful heart!!  I am truly blessed to have her for my Mom.
Well, my hubby hung my chandelier in my kitchen and last night, he decided to hang my new punched tin light in my entryway.  Oh ladies……he did a wonderful job and I must say that it looks absolutely beautiful, but then again I had no doubt (lol).  So, are you all ready to see it?  I never really knew how much prim light fixtures could warm up a home, but after seeing my tin light…..yep, it indeed made my entryway a nice warm place to enter our home.  I have never been fortunate enough to have fancy lighting like this so when my Mom mentioned to me that she wanted to buy me a light, I was super excited.  We pinch pennies alot here in home now that I am a stay at home Mom, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.  After working with one company in Corporate America for over 10 years, it was hard to leave that job and most importantly the money, but if you would ask me if I would do it all over again for my son….. I would say “heck yeah”.  My son is my whole world and I would do anything for him.  I loved the fact that I didn’t miss a thing over the past 2 1/2 years of being with him.  What a blessing!
Ok, enough of my rambling….. here is my light fixture that I have been dying to show you all.  Isn’t it beautiful?
113 116
111
Doesn’t it look beautiful?  I just love it.  Thank you again Mom for being so thoughtful.  I am so very blessed.
125
This post is chuck full of goodness!  Let’s talk about that beautiful rusty handle above.  I must say that I absolutely fell in love with this piece when I found it at the Antique Mall last weekend.  I knew I could find a home for this beauty somewhere in my home and hopefully today I will.  Don’t you love the look of that old rusty handle?  Can you guess what I bought?  Well, if you guessed an old barn door then you are correct.  I thought it would either look great in a corner or even used as a small room divider.  The possibilities are endless.  So, are you all anxious to see it?  Well, here it is……..
126
I loved the color and though that it would be great to add a small splash of color in our family room.  Don’t you love it?  The reverse side of the door is just as neat.  Totally prim and perfect for my home.  I will keep you posted on where I put it.
Today is suppose to be in the mid 60’s here in Ohio so we are going to get out and enjoy the weather.  I leave you with this picture titled…. Precious Meets Prim.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  What a cutie pie.
101
Until Next Time…..
Prim Blessings, Lisa
