Whatcha Working on Wednesday & Then Some

Today I decided to finish a few things, but noticed something else in my kitchen that needed a makeover too so I gave it a quick makeover. You all were so right when you said that I would start painting everything. My Mom is always joking around with me and telling me not to paint my son (lol). Anyway, I finished this peg board today. The picture doesn't do it justice. It looks more primitive then what it looks like in this picture. I was going to use it for us to hang coats on, but now I am thinking that it looks to good to cover up. Hmmm, we will see.

This is the item I found in the kitchen that needed the makeover. Unfortunately when I uploaded the pictures the after picture came up first. So, here is the after picture and the before picture is below. I definitely think that my knife holder looks alot better and doesn't stick out like a sore thumb!

Ok, here are a couple pictures of my kitchen. These are supposedly oak cabinets, but probably the cheapest oak cabinets that you have ever seen. I know that the builder probably just used the cheapest stuff they could find. Anyway, I am starting to get the itch to paint my cupboards and antique them. I see all of you or must of you working with this Briwax. Have any of you painted your cupboards and used Briwax on them or a stain of some sort over top of them to give them that old primitive look? I want to paint them a white or an ivory or something like that, but I definitely want them to have that old prim look. Are you all following me? Have you seen any sites that I can go to and check out pictures of kitchen cupboards? Do you have any painting ideas/tips/tricks? We have the same cupboards throughout the house so I thought I would try what I want to do in my kitchen in one of my bathrooms and see what it looks like and if it works then I will then move on to the kitchen. I know it is definitely going to be a chore, but I am willing and quite anxious to give these cupboards a new and improved look. What are your thoughts. I am looking for all and any help I can get. Thanks Ladies!!

Oh - one more thing. Do you think I could make my own shelf to put over my stove and put my microwave on it or do you think it would be too close to the stove? I was thinking about having my FIL make me a shelf with a little door, but was kinda curious if it could be possible or not. Oh my goodness, since I started following all of you crafty women, it makes my mind go 100 mph 24/7 and I am always thinking about what I could do next. Yep, I can never shut down my mind. Oh well..... I guess it keeps me busy and now if it would just help me lose weight (lol).

I love your red walls in the kitchen!
I have never used Briwax on my cupboards.
I painted mine cream and then antiqued them with a mocha glaze the I brushed on the edges of the doors and on the frames and where ever else the wood was raised! I posted about it in my 2nd or 3rd post of last year.
I got the idea from a kitchen maid magazine that I requested from their website. It is full of cabinet ideas!
Be sure to and the cabinets and apply at least 2 layers of primer before painting them.
I used just a satin paint on mine. Then I sealed them with just a clear furniture paste wax to protect them.
I didn't see an email, so I'm not sure what you wanted.
You can contact me at momoffive35@yahoo.com.

Gosh, like I didn't say enough the first time!
I wanted to to say that your peg rack would look great with some dried herbs hanging on it...that way the rack still is very visible!
And one more thing...I'm not sure that I would put your microwave above the stove unless it has a vent underneath...I'm afraid the the heat, from the stove, would damage the bottom of the microwave!
Okay...that is all!

All I've got to say is it all looks marvelous. I love your redos and your kitchen is cute. I'm not an expert but I'd have to agree with Janene about the shelf possibly being too close to the stove. I don't know, I like the concept though. I've only just started using the Briwax so I can't say anything about doing the cabinets with them.. but I can't say enough how much I love this stuff. I can't wait to see what you do. Have a great day!!

Hugs,
Stella

I love the peg board and I don't think I would cover it up with coats. The knife holder looks great. I have been thinking of painting our kitchen cabinets, too (maybe like Jimmy did the coffee table). Right now they are white and just so drab. I am also constantly thinking about what I can do next. I have so many projects to work on and I keep finding more. Hope you have a great evening.

Lisa, here's an idea for the microwave. I wouldn't put in anywhere near the stove -- but there are microwave covers that are 3 sided (back open) or 4 sided (door opens) that look like a cabinet or a set of drawers that allow you to leave it on your countertop. I just love them and would love one, but I can't make it myself, and they run about $100 to purchase. I can send you the web site that shows the pic if you'd like, or look it up on Google under microwave cover.

I would say you have the painting bug! But it is the cheapest and easiest way to achieve the prim look! Keep up the good work!

Lisa, cute peg rack. I wouldn't use it for coats either - show that baby off! Our first house had those same exact kitchen cupboards, I know what you mean about wanting to change them up. I'm much happier in this house with my cranberry colored cupboards, which are custom made by my woodworker husband. ~Ann

I love your red kitchen! Your painted cabinets will look great against those walls. I think the peg rack is too cute to cover up too.

Lisa,
Great makeovers! Yes, once you start painting, it seems you end up painting EVERYTHING. I have really calmed down a lot but Jeremy, my husband, used to ask me if we could just buy one thing without me painting it when we got it home! LOL

My cabinets are way cheaper oak than yours...lol I live in a mobile home :) Anyway, I painted mine a cream about four years ago and this past summer, I rubbed gel stain over them for an antiqued look. I love them! I left them go so far and they have lightened up some so I'm about to seal them. If you go to my blog and look through the labels for my kitchen, there should be pictures there somewhere....we put in new counter tops before the 4th of July...so that's about the time that I have the photos of the cupboards!

Have a great night!

I think your cupboards look great right now against your red walls. But painting them would look just as good. I use the Minwax Colonial Walnut gel stain on alot of my painting projects and it looks great when dry. Not as expensive as briwax either.

Love your re-do and peg rack!

Love the pegboard and the knife holder! Looks great! I don't think the microwave would work out too well there - seems too close to the stove. But what do I know? lol
Can't wait to see what you do with your kitchen!

I love your kitchen! No advice, but I can't wait to see what you decide to do with them!

I love that shade of red. My current kitchen is that shade and a yellow, mustardy color. I wanted to do the kitchen at the other house like that too but DH didn't like the dark color. Oh well.... I will give in this time....but watch out bathroom!

Lisa,
We did my mil's kitchen cabinets. Rather than sanding, and re-sanding, then painting, we used a water bonding primer called stix. It will make paint stick to anything. Its been over 1 year, and no chips or cracks. A professional painter recommended the stuff, and it works great, just apply and let dry before painting! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

I love your kitchen! Believe me, I think my cabinets are much cheaper made than your's! They have NO molding or anything. Just plain planks of wood and they are painted a creamy white. I want to add some molding and paint over them in cranberry or black, or maybe just distress and antique them. And add new pulls. But it's such a big job, I have been afraid to get started! LOL! So I'll sit back and wait to see your's! hehehe!

I agree - unless it is a special metal and ventilated shelf, don't put the microwave over the stove. The heat from it will ruin the microwave.

I know several gals who painted their cabinets in an ivory and brshed a stain over them. Just clean the cabinets really well and use the very best paint you can afford. And take pics along the way. I want to do the same but DH love the cabinets the way they are. UGH!

Hi girl!
Sorry I missed this post...I have been so busy trying to convert my pineapple into a BUNNY! LOL!

I re-did my cabinets, I sanded them and put a coat of paint on them -creamy beige color...then sanded and stained and wiped the stain off...then I put a couple coats of water based poly on them, just so I can wipe them off if need be with a damp cloth. I did not use a primer, and I don't know anout using wax on them, all my wax says to keep away from water...and since I am known to splash and drip ...I stayed clear of the wax...
Good luck with 'em!

I would like to know what kind of paint you used on your knife block? I have the same one and would like to change mine as well.
